In Memory of Dr. Ada Adimora – A Trailblazing Physician Scientist and Mentor
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our esteemed colleague, Ada Adimora, Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine and professor of epidemiology. Dr. Adimora, a brilliant and compassionate physician scientist, left an indelible mark on our department and the broader medical community.
The funeral service for Dr. Adimora will be held on Monday, January 8 at 12 pm.
The Department of Medicine is honored to welcome new Tar Heel trainees! The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) released results for the 2023 Medicine and Pediatric Specialties Match on November 29.
More than 7,000 applicants matched to advanced training positions. After a successful Match, the following fellows will join Department subspecialties in July 2024.
Dr. Vavalle inspires and guides NC School of Science and Mathematics students
Throughout the school year, two high school students engage in mentorship sessions with Dr. John Vavalle to work on an independent research project.
This year, the accomplishments of the students, Divya and Ciara, reached new heights when both students presented their abstracts at the TVT Conference in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Rajiv Patel, a research fellow, was co-author on the abstract.
Dr. Erin Steinbach, allergist, grew up with adopted and biological siblings.
Dr. Christopher Hurt, infectious diseases physician, is an AFOL (adult fan of LEGO).
Dr. Janice Hwang, endocrinologist, lived in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was elected president.
Dr. Todd Baron, gastroenterologist, races competition go karts and has won two Grand National Championships.
Dr. Amanda Nelson, rheumatologist, keeps moose hip bones from a research project in her office.
Dr. Nikolaos Mavroglorgos, infectious diseases physican, has climb Mt. Olympus twice.

Meet Lara Valerio!
Lara A Valerio, MS, RD, LDN, is a registered dietitian in the Division of Infectious Diseases. It's on her bucket list to write a book on all the nutrition tips and tricks she has learned over the course of being a dietitian. Lara is an avid traveler and has visited 13 countries so far.
Ben Eavenson, MD, is originally from Georgia. After graduating from Emmanuel College, he worked as a full time EMT and also served as a volunteer firefighter. Ben enjoys being outdoors, cycling, and running and has completed 3 ironman races!
An intense two-day education event, the Tar Heel Boot Camp is designed for APPs and physicians in adult clinical care settings. Save the date for April 5 &6 at the Friday Center. Registration opens soon.
